What happens when you run one of D.C.’s top restaurants and the space directly below you becomes available? If you are Johnny Monis, the chef/owner of the terrific modern Greek restaurant Komi, you lease the space and open a Thai restaurant. Then you sit back and wait for comments like the following to come in: “A surprisingly authentic and unabashedly spicy take on Thai food”; “it is rare to see such a successful chef step out of his comfort zone”; and
“Monis’ take on pork laab is the single best Thai dish I have ever eaten.” Another bonus is the $45 price-fixed menu, making it one of the best meals in the D.C. area in terms of price-to-quality ratio. On the other hand, a major downside is the no-reservation policy, which results in seriously long lines some evenings. |
