Amma
New York, NY
246 E. 51ST ST.
212-644-8330
This small place first made a name for itself in 2003 when Hemant Mathur was in charge of the kitchen. And while Mathur eventually left to open the now defunct Devi, Amma chugs on, turning out some of the best Indian food in the country. Regulars know that the best way to enjoy the restaurant is to order the seven-course tasting menu, which along with the usual barrage of kebabs, koftas and tandooris, lists the rarely seen crispy fried spinach, along with grilled bay scallops served in a potato basket with a red pepper sauce. It is pricier than other Indian restaurants in the city, which isn’t all that surprising given that the restaurant’s fans say things like “I worship the place.” |
