Walking into Katz's is like going back in time. The interior, which includes a sign sporting their famous slogan "Send a salami to your boy in the Army," hasn't changed since the '40s. What sets it apart from other delis is an exceptional pastrami sandwich, sliced by hand and served steaming hot. Ordering is part of the fun: There are four slicing stations, and after you tell your slicer whether you prefer your pastrami juicy or lean, he will offer you a few slices to sample. One taste will send you into a state of ecstasy, causing you to nod your head in approval, after which he will slice enough meat for a sandwich 3 or 4 inches high. Besides the "ethereal pastrami," the "Hot dogs have a nice crispy skin," and "The turkey sandwih is always solid," but most find the corned beef underwhelming. If you can't stomach the lines there is waiter service along the back wall.
