While its brick oven has been turning out crusty pies since 1933, this East Harlem legend vaulted in popularity in the 1970s - when many Manhattanites considered traveling up to Harlem a dangerous proposition - after the New Yorker mentioned it in a profile on music industry legend Ahmet Ertegun. Since then, however, numerous pizzerias in town have installed a coal oven, so the pizza isn’t as unusual. However, it’s still worth venturing uptown to experience a "classic pie in a classic atmosphere."
