In 1932, after falling in love with papaya juice while on vacation in Miami, Gus Poulos introduced New Yorkers to the delights of tropical drinks. Three years later, Gus took a German bride and added frankfurters to his menu. The rest is culinary history. Now, nearly 80 years later, you can hardly walk by his stand without seeing a line of people waiting to order "a combo" (a pair of hot dogs with sauerkraut and a 16-oz. drink).
