The owners of Smitty's and Kreuz Market used to be partners. When they decided to split, Kreuz moved and Smitty's remained in this historic space where they have been slowly smoking cuts of meat since the turn of the century. As with any divorce, friends of the former duo often side with one or the other. In this case, Smitty's supporters prefer the "good and fatty brisket" to the competition's more famous version, declaring, "For history, atmosphere and barbecue that delivers, Smitty's is arguably the best barbecue joint in Texas."
